The Problem

During my time at BrainStation, I was tasked to identify a key problem patients are having with the current healthcare system and designing a digital solution for it.

MyHealthHub is a government-led initiative focused on improving patients experience with the health care system.

Secondary Research

My research started by gaining an understanding of the current challenges patients face while managing their health through existing healthcare services and sources of information. I discovered that people with multiple chronic illnesses struggle to manage their care due to miscommunication and poor coordination among the different health professionals involved in their treatment.

72% of [Americans] believe it is difficult for people living with chronic conditions to obtain the necessary care from their health care providers”

'The absence of systems, or poorly designed systems, and the resulting lack of integration are apparent across sectors, as well as within individual health care organizations. Such systems can harm patients or fail to deliver what patients need."

User Interviews

I interviewed 4 people who were managing two or more chronic conditions, either on their own or with support from a caregiver. Participants described gaps in communication between providers, limited access to their medical information and administrative hurdles. The theme I focused on:

Challenges w/ Coordinating Care

How might we create a more seamless experience for patients managing multiple providers, so that they experience less physical and mental distress?

Bio

After her last visit to the hospital, Jade realizes that she needs to have more control of her health care. She meticulously tracks her medical records because she’s frustrated by the lack of coordination between her healthcare providers. She wants a convenient and accessible way to manage her health.

Behaviors
  • Keeps track of medical history, prepares appointment questions, and researches medical information

  • Uses social media for leisure and to learn from others’ health experiences

  • Strongly believes in self-advocacy within healthcare

Pain Points
  • Fragmented healthcare system creates challenges to care

  • Often feels her input is disregarded, resulting in uninformed provider decisions

  • Wants digital health management solution but is concerned about data security and breaches

Goals
  • To feel in control of her health

  • Wants full access to all of her medical records

  • Wants tools and resources that support overall well-being and accommodate her needs

Design

I started the design process by creating a task flow for users to create a profile with their medical information. Users will only need to share these details in the profile set up so they can navigate the app without having to repeat information.

Testing + Improvements

I conducted a usability test with 3 participants and received valued insight on improvements to the overall experience of the app. Here are the changes I made based on their feedback:

So what's next?

If this were a real product moving toward launch, my focus would shift to understanding how people use MyHealthHub over time, ensuring their data is protected, and exploring ways to better support users before and after appointments.
